Brand Story: Yifan Renxu Studio
Yifan Renxu Studio is a contemporary art and design practice founded by RISD alumnus Yifan. Centered on ceramics, the studio uses experimental material language to subvert the medium's traditional stereotypes—fragility, hardness, and utility. Instead, we reactivate the expressive potential and emotional tension within the clay.
This philosophy is embodied in our signature "Pillow Vase" series. By simulating a state of "soft collapse", these works create a visceral conflict between the visual illusion of softness and the physical reality of hard ceramic, challenging the viewer’s perception of object and reality.
Our work navigates the boundary between art and design, the absurd and the poetic. Here, ceramics are not merely material; they are a language—a vessel for observing the nuances of daily life. We strive to create works that remain undefined, yet full of tension and infinite possibility.
The texture of Jingdezhen High-White Clay is distinct from common pottery clay—exceptionally delicate and pure. Through slip-casting, the ceramic becomes a medium capable of capturing intricate texture and tactile sensation. On this foundation, Yifan Renxu Studio developed its signature "Pillow Vase" series. The creation of this series is essentially a continuous dialogue between design and craft: the artist first constructs prototypes using clay and leather, allowing the material's inherent softness to dictate the form, before casting in plaster and slip-casting with High-White Clay.
The fine nature of the clay allows it to preserve every detail during the casting process—leather textures, creases, and structural undulations; this perception originally belonging to "softness" is permanently solidified onto the ceramic surface, forming a strong sensory displacement and visual impact. The conceptual "softness" of the design is realized through precise craftsmanship, while the physicality of the craft, in turn, completes the design itself. This material-driven approach allows the design to navigate between reality and illusion, creating a multi-dimensional resonance across vision, aesthetics, and touch.
